Jones Point Lighthouse Exhibition

This new exhibition at Alexandria's History Museum highlights the Jones Point Lighthouse, and the Fresnel lenses that guided vessels into Alexandria from the Potomac. A scale model of the building and interpretative panels discuss the history of the lighthouse from its construction in 1856 to recent restoration efforts. Also on view are two original Fresnel lenses, one of which was actually used in the lighthouse itself, which have just been restored. Note: Museum open 1-5 p.m. Sundays.

Mount Vernon is joyfully decking the halls for "Christmas at Mount Vernon," a special daytime program offered from Thanksgiving Day weekend through the Twelve Days of Christmas. Exciting additions this year include a dozen themed Christmas trees, a gingerbread Mount Vernon by former White House pastry chef Ronald Mesnier, historical chocolate-making demonstrations, 18th-century dancing, and a Christmas camel just like George Washington had on the grounds during Christmas 1787! The popular tradition continues on opening the rarely-seen third floor of the Mansion and inviting visitors to meet the charming "Mrs. Washington." Schedules may vary for dancing and "Mrs. Washington."

The exhibit features more than a dozen buildings and rooms in 1:12 scale, including a log cabin, stone home, one room schoolhouse, and church, as well as buildings inspired by real places in Alexandria, like a barbershop, attorney’s office and florist -- all influenced by actual businesses in the Parker-Gray community. ALDERSGATE CHURCH CHILDREN'S THEATER ANNOUNCES OPENING OF DISNEY’S ALADDIN JUNIOR Aldersgate Church Children's Theater (ACCT2) is pleased to announce the opening of Aladdin Jr. Directed by Kristina Friedgen and produced by Bailey R. Center and Kim Galvan, Aladdin Jr is a 70 minute version of the popular Disney story about a resourceful young hero, a wise-cracking genie, plus all of the favorite Aladdin characters of Agrabah, City of Enchantment, where every beggar has a story and every camel has a tail!! The award-winning score by Alan Menken (Music), and Howard Ashman (Lyrics) and Tim Rice (Lyrics), include "A Whole New World" and "Friend Like Me" and make this musical a perennial favorite. Both the story and the music in this delightful version closely follow the original 1992 film. So come take a magic carpet ride with a talented and energetic group of 33 youth actors ranging in age from 8 – 18 years old. You’ll be amazed at the colorful costumes and transported to the Arabian Nights by the creative set design. Lee, commanding general of the Confederate Army and one of Virginia’s most distinguished citizens, on the 202nd anniversary of his birth. Reenactors from the 17th Virginia Infantry, a unit that included many Alexandrians, will honor Lee with a salute, drills and camp life impressions. Free parking.
